Apple Maps (iOS) interface redesign

Apple Maps redesign cover

The problem

In the version of Apple Maps I reviewed, starting a journey took more taps than I expected. After searching for a location, there was no GO button to start immediately. Scheduling was also hard to find, and setting the date and time took several more taps.

The original screens show where the interaction became awkward:

  • There was no GO or START button on the results screen to begin the journey immediately.

  • The action for scheduling a journey was hard to find.

  • Tapping “leaving soon” opened another card that filled the screen.

  • Several taps stood between choosing a destination and starting the journey.

My redesign

I redesigned the route controls to reduce the taps needed to start or schedule a journey.

  • Add “GO” to the results page, saving one tap.

  • Show the journey scheduler when someone taps “Directions”, with fields for the starting point and destination.

  • Keep the date and time picker in a smaller pop-up so it doesn't cover the whole screen.

I designed the screens in Figma and built the interactions in Protopie.

Try the prototype

Open the prototype link below in your browser, or in Protopie Player on your phone. You'll need Protopie installed on your computer to edit the source file.

I built the prototype to demonstrate the interactions. Some behaviour is still incomplete and would need further development for a working app. Search for “Anglia Ruskin University” to follow the predefined route. You can't move around the map. I kept the date and time picker static to show the proposed flow; it doesn't provide working navigation.
